Disobey the Norms and Follow Your Instincts

Updated: Dec 12, 2021

Leen Shlomo

All our lives, we're taught to "obey" and "follow". Sally breaks free from her pack and leads the hunters in a completely different direction, disobeying them and doing what she believes to be right. We learned in the reading Interviews with 59 Black Female Executives Explore Intersectional Invisibility and Strategies to Overcome It that sometimes we women just have to take risks and lead our own paths that are divergent from societal norms. This is exactly what Sally did.

The article even states that "some women had to fight others’ low expectations of their skills and abilities in order to be granted the opportunity to prove themselves" and "rather than hiding their unique status, they chose to be authentic leaders"(5). I feel as if Sally was slightly undervalued in her abilities by her peers at first, but she takes the chance to prove her value and that she can be the leader of her pack. This is something women experience and can relate to in the world we live in today.

I admire the book My Way Sally because it teaches kids, especially girls, not to just sit and obey, but to take action and do the right thing. My Way Sally teaches a lesson that kids should know their whole lives and teaches girls progressive feminist views at an early age.
